Nau mai! Welcome!

If you have arrived here  you must be a teacher who has registered for #NZreadaloud Term 1 2021.

This is the blog for all classes who wish to connect using a blogging platform. Teachers will have administration rights so I suggest you sign in and maybe have a small group of interested kids to run your class's contributions.

If you are choosing Blogger to connect, it is expected that you contribute a post and reply at least once a week (preferably more). If every class connecting via this blog does this it will become an interesting collection of thoughts, ideas, activities, and perspectives.

Let's make this a real organic journal of our kids' learning. Teachers, when you have time please come in and reply to other students' posts as well as your own. They need to know there is an audience out there. Keep feedback positive and purposeful and try to encourage discussion by asking questions.

    Kia Ora,

Our names are Ethan, Luca, Daniel and Max and we would like to say a huge thank you to Kerri for all your hard work with the #NZreadaloud organisation. We are so thrilled to be a part of this NZRA group and are looking forward again to be connecting with other schools and teachers from around New Zealand.

The story ‘SS Penguin SOS’ by Adrienne Frater’ sounds extremely interesting especially as it is based on a Maritime disaster that happened within New Zealand waters. We are ready to sketchnote and get involved in this story, participate in the ‘real time’ discussions, connect with others and we are also looking forward to receiving and giving feedback and feed-forward alongside the teachers and other learners in our group.

We have been working on some pre reading activities in the lead up to working with the text and one of those activities was to analyse the front cover. Here is what we have analysed… We think that the bold red ‘’SOS’’ is implying the blood of the people who lost their lives on that fateful day, but we also think that because red is the most eye-catching colour on the cover of the book that it could be a way to catch people's attention and possibly those that would be interested in this thriller looking book. We also think that the worn and old paper could possibly imply the age of when this tragedy took place. We think that the grey colour could signify how the day turned out for many as many people lost their lives, loved ones and family members. What sparked our interest was the note on the back of the book that we think it is talking about what someone, perhaps the man, could have heard about the ship and the wreck because of what he has written. The images show us people in lifeboats and of people in distress. We wonder how many people perished and didn’t make it back to shore and how many struggled and survived.

One more thing that we found interesting was the painting on the front cover it was really interesting to look at. It made us wonder, was this tragedy as serious as it sounds/looks? The painting on the front cover is one of the coolest things about the book cover because it really is quite the piece to look at. That is all we have taken out of this book cover so far; we could say much more because this book is full of interesting things.

    Our Prediction

We think that this book will follow the events of the SS Penguin sinking and that the main character will be Jack and the hero will be his aunt. The aunt was the only woman who survived the ship sinking, and we think that she would be the hero because of this. We think that the aunty will have a major role in this story because of how much she has built up in the blurb. We think that her and “Jack” will be the main characters of this story…….

We would all like to hear all your predictions to see other people's perspectives, what do you think?

Ethan, Luca and Daniel and Max.

    1. Hi there Ethan, Luca, Daniel, and Max!

It is Kerri and I need to say: WOW - you guys blow me away. The depth of thinking in your analysis is a true demonstration to other students of what can be discovered if we really, truly look closely at a cover and blurb. Everything on the cover is there for a reason aye. When I have spoken to authors in the past, many have said they don't get a say in what goes on the cover; I wonder if Adrienne Frater had any say in this cover design? I wonder if you can find that out from somewhere. Unfortunately we can't connect with our author this time as she has passed away so you would have to problem-solve that one! You can do it!

I am really looking forward to reading more of your thinking and perspectives as we begin the text next week. I will make sure I jump into your Edmodo class and respond! You are such fab role models for other students so keep up the super work you are doing. If you can add a post in this blog once a week that would be wicked! Share a photo, a thought, a connection, some inquiry ... let's make the blog a living document of learning!

      Keep in touch

  2. Hi Kerri,

Thanks for the reply. We appreciate your compliments and questioning. We think that it is a great idea about researching the cover and digging deeper into the real meaning of the cover. You can really notice a lot more when you picture yourself in a moment in time. We will try and add a post each week, depending on our schedule. We will try and find out more about the front cover and see who had a say in it. We will use perseverance and try our hardest to find this information out.

We are also looking forward to reading the text with you. This week we are jumping into edmodo and starting to post our thoughts about the book, we are also going to reply to some other posts and make connections. We are modelling a Roblox boat at this point in time. We will post some photos of this boat. We will be trying to post on all the learning platforms weekly.

We hope that everything is well.

    Mā te wā,
    Luca, Daniel, Max and Ethan

  3. Kia Ora Kerri! We are grateful for all your wonderful replies and comments. We also appreciate your compliments on all of our work and we are excited to dive deeper into SS Penguin SOS with you and our fellow learners from around New Zealand.

We will post some photos of the work in the progress boat. Our next prediction is that further on in the story Wally will ask many more questions about his long lost sibling or siblings. What do you think about this?

    We hope that you're ok.

    Chur,
    Max, Ethan, Luca, Daniel
