Chapters 1-5 SS Penguin from Ashgrove School

Chapter 1-5 of SS Penguin NZ Read aloud

We are from Ashgrove School in Rangiora. This week we started to read SS Penguin. We read Chapter 1 to 5 and every day while our teacher read the book we used sketch-noting to record and remember the story. Sketch- noting is a great way to remind us about what has happened in the chapter and make connections in the story. We have also done some activities. Most of us learned some new words by finding out the definitions of some new vocabulary in the book.  Some of us did a mini inquiry about aspects of the story. For example NZ in the early 1900s, SS Penguin, School life in the 1900s. We are all hooked on the story and were so sad to find out that Wally had 2 brothers and 2 sisters before. Next we all want to have a go at posting on to Edmodo.

  1. Hi there everyone at Ashgrove school in Rangiora. Thank you for sharing this blog post of the learning you are doing as we start reading our book.

There were so much great vocabulary in these chapters; as a good reader we need to look them up if we are not sure because then it helps us get meaning from what we are reading. I learnt a new word myself - I did not know that 'steerage' was the cheapest accommodation on a ship.

I agree that it was a sad moment in those chapters when we find out Wally had brothers and sisters.

Keep up your fantastic mahi and keep sharing!

  3. Kia ora Ashgrove School in Rangiora. Thanks for sharing the mahi you've been doing. I particularly liked the vocabulary you shared - it's so great to learn new kupu and add them to our kete... then we can make use of them in our writing and speaking. Woop woop!
I also like the way you are doing some research as it can make things in the book easier to understand (and it's cool to learn new stuff!). I look forward to seeing what else you get up to!
